Pasta is an inexpensive and fun way to get your kids into craft….and who knew it would be so easy to dye it to make all sorts of vibrant colours! A few household inregients and you are on your way to so many pretty crafts! We made necklaces & decorated photo frames with our pasta, but the possibilites are endless!
You will need:
Dried Pasta – we used rigatoni as it’s wonderful for threading for necklaces
Food colouring &
(drumroll please)…Hand sanitizer (rubbing alcohol)!!!
You will also need:
Plastic zip lock bags
A tray
Baking paper
*Please note that children will need to be supervised at all times with the rubbing alcohol, it is NOT to be ingested.
Place your dried pasta in zip lock bags (one for each different colour).
Put 1-2 squirts of hand sanitiser/rubbing alcohol in each bag.
Then add approximately 10 – 15 drops of food dye (this will depend on how much pasta you have in each bag & how vibrant you want to make it).
Close up your bags and gently ‘massage’ the pasta so as to spread the colouring evenly all over.
Line a tray with baking paper. Empty the bags of pasta onto the paper. Allow to dry. If you need it sooner rather than later, you can put the tray in the oven on ‘defrost’ mode for a little while until dry.
And that’s it, you are done! Now for some Pasta Craft Ideas!
If you want to make your own ‘Cardboard Photo Frame’
You will need:
Cardboard
Scissors
Kids Craft Glue
Photo
Cut two pieces of cardboard to the same size (big enough to surround your size of photo).
Trace the outline of your photo onto one of the pieces of card and cut out.
Add glue around the border of the un-cut piece of card
Glue on your photo, then glue the cut out piece of card over the top.
Then let the little cherubs decorate until their hearts content!
To make Pasta Necklaces, all you need is a piece of wool/string & the pasta.
Tie your first piece of pasta on so the rest do not slip off.
Then just thread as many pasta pieces on as you need to complete your necklace.
Tie off at the end and you are done : )
My beautiful boy wanted to wrap the necklace & give it to me as a gift! Nawww! He told me to “Forget we had made the necklaces until I opened my present” Lol. Bless his little cotton socks : )

So glad to help Kara!! Jenni x
I’ve done this before, but used vodka as the alcohol source. Glad I have an alternate now, and can save the good stuff for Mommy!
you can swap the alcohol with 2 tablespoons of vinegar
This is sooooo awesome. Thanks for the KISS (keeping it so simple).
Hi, I love this but can I check, does the colour run off onto clothes if I make a necklace? Thanks 🙂
Our kids wear them and we haven’t had any problems…yet. We can’t 100% guarantee though! Good luck!
