Magic Paint Resist Stamping – perfect for learning sight words.

Paint resist Sight WordsI’m so excited to share this FUN, simple, educational & artistic ‘Magic Paint Resist Stamping’ activity! This activity is so much FUN but it can also be adapted to include so many learning processes. My 5 year old just LOVED finding and sounding out these words but she also enjoyed helping me to source the letters required to spell out each word in the first place!

All you’ll need –

  • One Homemade Stamp Pad using a sponge and plastic container
  • Vaseline (petroleum jelly)
  • Alphabet stamps  (we borrowed some from Miss M’s school)
  •  Cardstock
  • Watercolour Paints

Method –

Simply spread the Vaseline over the sponge, stamp the letters into this and then press onto the paper. There is no need to let it dry – you can simply paint straight over it with watercolours.

Note: You can also prepare these ahead of time and pull them and some watercolours out for a FUN rainy day activity.

Magic Painting

My daughter loved how the ‘Magic’ words appeared on the paper as she painted over them.

We think the finished painting looks amazing and have decided to do some of our favourite quotes like the above for our playroom :).

We look forward to sharing some more great ideas using this simple technique – like this simple handprint keepsake.

  1. I don’t have stamps, but I do have alphabet magnets, I bet it would work quite well. This is a fun alternative to the simple white crayon writing and watercolor revel technique.

  2. This is just gorgeous – I would love to know if this technique would work with acrylics and canvas? I am organising an art party for my daughter – it would be amazing to give each child at the party a canvas with their name on it that they get to paint.

    1. Hi Morena, The Vaseline works to repel the water based paints. Unfortunately I don’t think it would work as well with acrylics. I’m sure some canvases are okay for using watercolours though? Louise x

  3. This is genius! I’ve not seen vaseline used as a paint resist technique before. Can’t wait to give it a go. Love it! Pinned and shared 🙂
