This is such a FUN, inexpensive and easy sensory bag/game to make! My 7 year old uses it to find her weekly spelling words and my 3 year old loves to find different letters. I think it would be perfect for long car journeys as there are so many ways you can use it! You might like to play a few find-a-word games with it, the beads move easily around inside the gel so it’s possible to spell many different words.
What you’ll need –
- 2 x zip lock bags (we used sandwich sizes)
- two paper plates
- hair gel (ours cost under $2)
- Alphabet beads (most craft and discount stores should stock these)
- Glue
- Sticky tape
- Scissors
Instructions –
Fill your zip lock bag with hair gel and the alphabet beads (I find it easier to do this inside a mug), secure the zip lock and place inside a second zip lock bag for extra strength. Cut the inner square or circle from one of the paper plates. Secure the gel pouch to the inside of the whole paper plate using sticky tape before gluing the cut frame onto the top. You can watch the quick YouTube tutorial below.
You might choose to add some food colouring to the gel to change the colour or maybe use number beads instead. Here is a similar sensory plate we made for Valentines Day or click here to find all our sensory play ideas.
