I had seen this done before a few times on Pinterest and I was very interested to try it! I knew Master 4 would love it…it’s hard not to! Science & Art all swirled into one!
Check out our cool video at the top of this post!
You will need:
Full cream milk
Food dye
Dish soap
Shallow dish (preferably see through)
Cotton tips
There’s my handsome little model. Add your milk to the dish…about 2 cms deep.
Then add a few drops of each food colouring colour to the milk – the more you add, the better ‘effect’ you will have. In saying that though, do not overcrowd the colours ie make sure they are not touching.
Now for the MAGIC!
Dip your cotton tips into the dishwashing liquid, then dip them into your milk. There is only one for this WOW!
It’s amazing how quickly the colours shoot around the dish & mix with each other. It’s like fireworks in a dish! The fat in the milk reacts with the dish soap!
Keep dipping your cotton tips into the dishwashing liquid & back into the milk mixture to keep the action going
Then start all over again! We did this about 3 times & every time was just as fun as the last! I can highly recommend this activity! My little man loved it & I know your kiddies will too!

I feel cheated, there was nothing like this when I was a kid!!!
I guess I’ll just have to make up for it in my old age!!
Thanks, love it !
I know how you feel Lorraine!! There’s no time like the present though lol!! Jenni x
I have seen a few take a white piece of paper and lay lightly on the of the colors after you are finished playing and then taking the paper off and letting it dry and had a pretty dry art work too…
What a great idea Joyce!! Thanks for sharing
Wouldn’t this be really cool if jelly was added to the ingredients!
Place a coffee filter on top your milk art briefly (and lightly), remove, allow to dry. You now have captured a picture of your art!
I was wondering, could I use evaporated milk in place of the full cream milk?
I haven’t tried this Jessica, but if you give it a go, let us know so we can add it to the blog for our readers!! Thank you : ) Jenni x
