We are loving the ‘Frozen’ movie at the moment and I have been busy coming up with Frozen Activities for the kids. This ‘Frozen’ Erupting Snow was a definite hit! We have also made Frozen Silly Putty, Frozen Snow Paint and even this pretty Frozen Snowflake Necklace.
BUT to make your own ‘Frozen’ Erupting Snow you will need:
1 x 500g bag of bicarbonate soda
1 x can of shaving cream/foam
blue glitter
vinegar
Step 1
Pour your bicarbonate soda into a large mixing bowl
Step 2
Add the can of shaving cream (we found we only needed about 3/4 of a can to get the thick ‘snow like’ consistency that we were after).
Step 3
Add as much glitter as you like – we added about 2 tablespoons – we LOVE glitter! Now give your mixture a good stir.
Your mixture will look like this. Isn’t is awesome? Due to the shaving cream, the ‘snow’ even feels cold! This is fun just to play with on it’s own too!
Now to get the ‘erupting’ part of this activity happening, you just need to pour the vinegar over your snow and watch the magic happen…
The kids love to watch their ‘magic snow’ erupt! We bet Queen Elsa & Princess Anna would have loved this when they were kiddies! It’s so easy to do over and over again too! It’s also great fun to play with the foamy remnants!
I babysit for two girls and one of them LOVES Frozen. And the last time I babysat for them this summer I did this and they LOVED it!! I’m kind of a science person and thought this was genius!
Calum? Sorry! I was looking at this site and saw your name and I kinda freaked out.
-Side Note:
This frozen snow is awesome 🙂
I am to!!
If u r looking 4 fun activities 4 kids or elderly people 2 all u have 2 do is take 1 box of baking soda with 1 cup of water and add food coloring is optional usually favorite color mix all together then using your hands to pick up mixture and try to form a ball and it will do it but once u stop it turns into goo this project is theraputic for hand exercising too The name of it is called ( goo) it a fun activity to do and when u r finished with it u can cover and place in refrigerator for a later use
If you’re using baking soda to make goo, then you mix it with glue or dish soap. Baking soda dissolves in water. To make goo with water, you mix water with corn starch.
Great ideas
OMG this is amazing! My kids absolutely love Frozen so I will definitely have to try this with them this weekend.
Can I have the recipe for the frozen silly putty & frozen snowflake necklace directions? I’m throwing a frozen party next weekend for my kids! Trying to.find fun things for all the kids to do(boys & girls). Please let me know ASAP. 🙂
Hi Tiffany,
If you click this link you should be able to find all our fun Frozen activities :). Have a great time at the party! Louise x
I can get them too.
Hi Tiffany,
You might want a facepainter who does all the Frozen stuff…Elsa or Ana’s face, Olaf, Frozen princess’ crown, Elsa’s gloves..
Please let me know of any frozen party idea you might have. We will have a bounce house. Could use some ideas of other thing for the boys & girls to do. 🙂
Draw an Olaf (or buy a poster) and play, “Pin the nose on Olaf.”
Snacks: carrot sticks = Olaf’s nose
Pretzel sticks = Olaf’s arms
Hershey’s kisses = true love’s kiss
Marshmallows (3 different sizes) =
build an Olaf
Bottled water = relabeled “Melted
Snowman”
A bottle of Advil!
I have done a snowman with banana instead of marshmallow and used peanut butter as the glue. The kids loved it!
Such great ideas….I have twins who want a Frozen themed birthday party next month and I love all of these ideas.. thanx so much for this sharing.. I love how much everyone is loving the movie “Frozen” too… our 3 youngest are almost 7&8 years old.. and they know every single song in the movie by heart…we went camping 3 weeks ago and they were acting out the movie and singing every song together in melody different character parts….they were just playing and singing but they knew every part! They were on these flat rocks and I heard someone laughing behind me and I turned around and about 40 other campers had gathered around watching them!!!!! Everyone there applauded them and saying how great they were . .my husband and stood there in disbelief. ..1 of the twins is usually so shy we have to really build her up to get her to talk or even play with other kids and she was singing and acting out the scenes so loud and with such confidence… it was so awesome to see it… parents were asking us afterwards how long they have been singing together..(um since 20 minutes ago haha)… it was the cutest thing to see….i am never surprised being a mother of 6….. but they really surprised me.. i just never saw them that interested or into movies like this before. ..I can’t wait to see what they think of these activities and games…. we have no snow where we live..so we will make some!! Olaf snowmen, putty, necklaces, etc. Thank you soo much for sharing:))
Awwww Francine! Thank you so much for sharing this with us :). It sounds like you have a beautiful family! So happy you found our blog! We have a few more ‘Frozen’ activities to come…watch this space! Louise x
Have you looked on Pinterest? Hundreds and hundreds of ideas. Used many of them for my daughter’s party in July.
This looks like so much fun! Definitely pinning!
where is the best place to buy the bicarbonate soda?
We purchased ours in the Baking section of our local grocery store.
bicarbonate soda is baking soda
It’s also called baking soda and you should be able to find it at your local grocery store hope this helped
Where can I find the bag of bicarbonate soda
We purchased ours in the Baking section of our local grocery store.
Try glow in the dark bubbles. 2 glowsticks poured into a bottle of bubble mix
In the US, bicarbonate soda goes by the name “baking soda,” is sold in a box, and can be found in any grocery store.
Where can I find bicarbonate soda in the bag
We purchased ours in the Baking section of our local grocery store.
Baking soda is bicarbonate soda.
Bicarbonate of soda is just baking soda. They have big bags of it by the flour and also in the laundry aisle.
So…. where do you purchase this bag of bicarbonate soda.. ??? Sound like alot of FUN !!
Baking soda is just an alternative name for bicarbonate of soda.
Bicarbonate of soda = baking soda
It’s just baking soda. They sell big bags of Arm & Hammer baking soda, in the laundry section and also in the baking aisle.
Bicarbonate soda is Baking soda 🙂
Such neat Ideas!
Very neat
Do you people really not know what bicarbonate soda is? Woowww……
Bicarbonate Soda is the very same thing as baking soda for those who confused about why they can’t find it. In the U.S. we just call it simply ‘baking soda’.
Love this and I haven’t even seen the movie!!! Will try it out with my little ones – they’re going to love it. Thanks for sharing.
Cool..
For those in the U.S.A. wanting to try this out, bicarbonate soda = baking soda 🙂
For those looking for bicarbonate soda, in the US it’s sold as baking soda..
I did it my 5 years old love our even my teenagers. Thanks
How long does the snow last!?
It sure doesn’t last long in our house Kim, but without adding the vinegar, you should get at least a few weeks if kept in a snap lock bag or air tight container : ) Jenni x
I have not done this before so don’t know how to do it. I would like all things to do with frozen eg cakes, erupting snow, putty, paint etc for birthday party. Also I wood like to be able to access all your ideas on crafts, birthday parties etc. I have managed to sign up but do not know how to see options for things. I am only a learner for this, hope you can understand. I think what little I have seen is great.
Many thanks for your understanding. Hope you can reply.
Hi Lyn, thank you for visiting us! If you go to our home page (www.pagingfunmums.com) there will be a ‘search bar’ at the top right, just type in what you are looking for i.e.: ‘Frozen’ and it will bring up all of our Frozen activities. There are also category tabs running across the top of the site to help with your search! I hope this helps! Jenni x
On the Snowball craft, could you do this a week in advance, and put the snowballs in baggies for party favors? (with directions on the eruption part for them to do at home?) Or will the snowballs not last that long and need to be erupted right after making?
Thanks.
I think that should be fine Ashley! What a nice idea! Jenni x
If I do this with my girls, though, I want to tell them why it happens. How do you explain this to make it truly scientific and educational?
From wiki answers:
When Baking soda and vinegar are combined, it makes a fizzing reaction when the Acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with Sodium Bicarbonate (the chemical name for baking soda). The result is some water, Sodium Acetate and Carbon Dioxide gas (the bubbles). What actually happens is this: the acetic acid (that’s what makes vinegar sour) reacts with sodium bicarbonate (a compound that’s in baking soda) to form carbonic acid. It’s really a double replacement reaction. Carbonic acid is unstable, and it immediately falls apart into carbon dioxide and water (it’s a decomposition reaction). The bubbles you see from the reaction come from the carbon dioxide escaping the solution that is left. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air, so, it flows almost like water when it overflows the container. It is a gas that you exhale (though in small amounts), because it is a product of the reactions that keep your body going. What’s left is a dilute solution of sodium acetate in water. Chemical reactions: Acetic Acid: CH3COOH -> CH3COO- + H+ Sodium Bicarbonate: NaHCO3 -> Na+ + HCO3 – H++ HCO3- -> H2CO3 Carbonic Acid H2CO3 -> H2O + CO2 It will “explode” in a way that most kids with those materials to hand could tell you about.
but why does it get that reaction with the shaking cream as well? (please help )
Thanks for the fun things to do
A fun nana
Hi Kathleen, you are so welcome!! We are so happy to have so many Fun Nanas on our page!! Louise x
Thank you for the wonderful idea,I’m a pre-school teacher and always looking for something to do with my school kids. Also my daughter loves frozen so this activity is great. Thank you.
Sounds fun I run a motel n feel the kids will love this project
If I was a five-year-old, I would absolutely love this! I just put a sensory table together for my twin nieces and their older sister, all HUGE fans of Frozen. Can’t wait to do this with them. Thanks for helping me score more Awesome Aunt points, this is a great idea.
My son and I had a ball making this! He is going to do it for his science project at school.
Thank You!
That’s great news Sarah! Thanks for letting us know! It makes for a great science project indeed : )
We’re totally doing this tomorrow.
That is great. Love all the ideas. Good job.
I love how you answer each and every question. That is so awesome just started following you. cant wait to see more fun ideas.
Hi Laurie, We try our best :). Welcome to our page! We have so many ideas and fun crafts to share :). Louise x
Please add me to your mailing list.
I’ve been looking for a snow recipe. Would this work as a snow for the kids to play with without adding the vinegar (erupting step)? My plan was to make snow to fill our sand table with 🙂
Yes, that will work out fine Vanessa! Let us know how you go! Jenni x
Hi louise!
I tried this activity on my own today, but I couldnt make the ‘snow’ form into a ball like your picture (it formed lumps of ‘snow’ but couldnt stick tgt to form a ball)
was wondering if i put too little baking soda or shaving cream? For your information, I couldnt find shaving cream so I used shaving foam instead.
thank you!
Hi Su,
I’m not sure why your mixture isn’t forming a ball? Perhaps try adding a little more cream? I’m not familiar with shaving cream versus foam but that could also be the issue? Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
Louise x
Omg yes my girls and little boy will love this looks so fun !
500g of baking soda is one 16 oz. box. The box is about 454g, so close enough for this experiment. If you have bulk sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) then you can just scoop two cups for each batch. Hope that helps.
Im going to try this frozen tomarrow. Ty for the idea
This sounds like such an awesome project to do with the little ones, especially (like all the other littles) since our girls love frozen!! 🙂 Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Have a good day!
Not to be the negative one here…but no way would my daughter play with this 🙁 She HATES the smell of vinegar!!!!
She can play with the “snow” without adding the vinegar. Once you add the vinegar, the “snow” starts to fizz, foam up, and disappear.
My 2 daughters love Frozen so much that they made there brother be Olaf for Halloween so they could go as Anna and Elsa. I’m planning on doing a Frozen themed party for my 2 year olds birthday and I can’t wait to use all these ideas as party favors and activities.
We want to pretend we have snow is this harmful to grass and plants?
Hi Mary, admittedly this isn’t the lawns best friend. You could put a plastic sheet/table cloth under it all to help this! Jen x
How much vinegar?
You can use as much or as little as you like. We probably used 2 cups in total. 🙂 Have fun!
Love this. Would love to see more
I love all these crafts recipes.I am having a birthday party for my 7 year old.she loved the movie of Frozen. thanks again for all the crafts.
With the ingredients, how many participants can this serve?
I am planning a polar bear theme for my daughters 3rd birthday. I love your frozen themed crafts! We’ve already made the silly putty and it will be perfect for goody bags. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
Hi Kina,
In case you will be needing a face painter for your daughter’s birthday, you may want to checkout my face painting work in my Facebook page: Party Faces DXB. I guarantee you with awesome designs and safe but vibrant-colored paints. Thanks!
My daughter LOVES this! We include it in our “science experiments,” and she has a blast making “snow” balls. Thank you so much for the idea!
Wow, adding the shaving cream to the baking soda is brilliant! If you want to eliminate the odor of vinegar, use a spoonful of citric acid crystals dissolved into a glass of water. Same effect, simply swapping citric acid for acetic–but no smell!
How much bicarbonate soda do we add in it ?
1 normal size box like the kind you would put in your refrigerator.
why does this happen
Because of an acid-base reaction that yields carbon dioxide gas.
In short, science!
Love the ideas for my grand children. They love learning.
Bicarbonate soda works better than baking soda. You get a better eruption due to it being more of a negative agent.
baking soda is Bicarbonate soda… unlike baking powder which is an baking soda and cream of tartar ……. that will not work
Where can you buy the bicarbonate soda at?
Any dollar store, drug store or grocery store carries Bicarbonate (“Baking”) Soda.
Where can I if the bicarbonate soda at
Bicarbonate soda is baking soda. Same exact thing.
How long will this keep?
What kind of vinegar??
My Preschool class loved this.
A trip to the Dollar General was cost saving for our snow day at school.
This looks like great fun! I am starting a new part time job with preschoolers while I continue to pursue my education in Early Childhood Education, and I would love to do this with the kids! How big of a bowl do you need to keep it from all spilling over? I don’t have a lot of space to work in, and I might have to do this on the floor with a vinyl table cloth underneath us. Thanks!
Hi Fiona, I would recommend you use a medium plastic storage box. Something with sides around 30cm high but with enough room for lots of little hands to explore in. Lou x
Am I right that the 500g bag is equal to 4 cups?
No, it is a little over 2 cups. To make life easier, just get a box of baking soda that is the standard 500 g size.
I thought I’d try making this at home before doing it at work with the kids, and it didn’t turn out at all the way I thought it would. I’ve added 2 additional boxes of baking soda, and it is still very sticky. I used Skintimate shaving cream. Perhaps this is the wrong kind to use?
