Petbarn in conjunction with Greencross Vets recently ran the ‘Petbarn’s Biggest Pet Loser’ challenge at www.petbarnbiggestpetloser.com.au. They were encouraging pet owners to help pets get rid of their ‘puppy fat’ and improve the general health and fitness of pets and their ‘pet parents’.
My gorgeous cat Baxter & I decided to take more care of ourselves. I started being more active with him and stopped giving him treats! I’ve been walking and watching what I eat and I feel a million dollars. I’m not only improving the quality of our lives, but extending them! To celebrate that, I have researched and compiled a list on:
How to add years to your pet’s Life
1. FEED THEM A DIET OF HIGH QUALITY FOOD.
If you feed your beloved pet high quality food, they have a strong immune system, shiny coat, fantastic intestinal health, strong muscles and joints and most importantly general well being and mental happiness. If you’re looking for a high quality food, head to Petbarn for some great products.
2. DO NOT OVERFEED YOUR PET…KEEP THEM LEAN.
Just like humans, overweight pets are at risk for many health issues. They are prone to heart disease, diabetes and it’s been proven that obesity can shorten your pets life by at least two years! We all tend to think we’re spoiling our pets, by giving them little treats, but we are actually doing them damage.
3. MAKE SURE THEY ARE EXERCISED REGULARLY.
Many pets are not getting as much exercise as they should. It will be dependant on the type and breed of you pet, but for example a dog will need between 30 minutes and two hours per day exercise to keep them fit and healthy. Make sure you speak to your local vet about how much exercise your pet should be doing.
4. TAKE YOUR PET TO THE VETERINARIAN REGULARLY.
Again, like us, pets need a good check up regularly. Not only will you be up to date on the latest vaccinations, flea & tick treatments etc but regular check ups will ensure early detection of any diseases/illnesses your pet may have. Early diagnosis improves chances of successful treatment…and can actually save you a lot of money in the long run too!

5. KEEP YOUR PET’S MOUTH CLEAN.
Dental disease in pets is actually more common than you think. It can lead to a lot of pain for your pet, which in turn makes it difficult for them to eat. If dental disease is left untreated, it can sometimes lead to heart and kidney disease. A great tip is to clean your pets teeth at home. You don’t necessarily need a toothbrush either, there are many other alternatives such as particular ‘treats’ and toys. Ask your veterinarian or informed pet store such as Petbarn for some recommendations.
6. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR PET TO ROAM UNSUPERVISED.
It used to be common practice for pets to be able to roam the neighbourhood and there were a lot of fatalities due to this. We now know that our pets are susceptible to a number of dangers including automobile accidents, exposure to disease, poisons and of course attacks by other animals.
By following these tips, you can improve and extend the life of your precious pet!
