‘Frozen’ Playdough

Frozen Playdough

We all know kids love Frozen and my two are definitely not an exception! We’ve made slimy, stretchy Frozen Silly Putty, beautiful Frozen Snow Paint, a very pretty Frozen Snowflake Necklace, a sciencey Frozen Erupting Snow,Frozen Elsa Ice Castle and creative Frozen Snowflake Art. What’s missing? You guessed it Frozen Playdough!

We love our No Cook Playdough Recipe and make it all the time, so we used that recipe and added blue food colouring and sparkly glitter to create a ‘Frozen’ like playdough that I bet Elsa & Anna would love to play with!

To make your own you will need:

1 cup of flour

1/2 cup of salt

2 tbs of cream of tartar

1 tbs of oil

Blue food colouring

1 cup of boiling water

Blue and/or silver glitter

Directions

Step 1

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil into a large mixing bowl.

Step 2

Add 5 – 10 drops of the blue food colouring to 1 cup of boiling water

Step 3

Add the boiling water and mix well. *Please take care when using boiling water around children.

Step 4

Add as much glitter as you like! We used LOADS! (probably about 50 grams)

Step 5

Stir well until the mixture is well combined

Step 6

Roll it out on a flat surface and you are ready for some Frozen playdough FUN!

    1. Haha! We love you too Dani! A Frozen Party sounds fantastic! We have plenty of Frozen activities for you! Glad to help! Jenni x

  1. Hi, I just found your post on Pinterest. I think my daughter would LOVE this Frozen playdough, however, I just have one question, and it may be quite silly. With the cream of tartar, is the playdoughable to be left out at room ttemperature? Does it have a pretty standard life, or is it shortened? I have never used it in playdough, so I am just wondering.
    Thank you!

    1. Cream of tartar is not the same as tartar sauce. It is found with the spices in the market. 🙂 I only have made play dough with this, and the shelf life in indefinite as long as you store it in a covered container. No refrigeration necessary.

  2. I’ve been making play dough with cream of tar tar for about 15 years now and it last forever! I didn’t know there was any other way to make it!

  3. Hi! Can you tell me how much this makes? I need to make enough for 24 kids for my daughter’s Frozen Bday party:)

  4. It’s lovely and soft, but my blue was a soft blue (yet a very Frozen color) with the bright blue sparkles. So it did turn out well. But I was wondering what food coloring you used to get the color you did–I love that blue!

    1. Hi Mimi, you might need to add a little more flour? We never usually have that problem. I hope that helps. Louise x

      1. Mine came out extremely sticky. I added more of all the dry ingredients, until they were double the amount called for. Still sticky. Chilled it in the refrigerator, still too sticky to use. 🙁

  5. Thanks for this – perfect giveaway for my daughter’s party. Just a quick question – does the glitter make a ton of mess or does it stay in the playdough – I don’t want parents to hate me! 🙂

    1. Hi Melissa, the glitter stays in the playdough :). You might just see a tiny bit on their hands but it’s mostly very clean…well as clean as playdough can be! lol Louise x

  6. Is there any susbsitution for the cream tartar, as it is not available were I live? I searched thy said baking powder is that true?

    1. Hi Eman,

I don’t think baking powder will work the same way. I’ve made this recipe without the cream of tartar once and it was okay – I think it just helps it to last a little longer??? I’m not 100% sure.
      Louise x

  7. Thanks so much for the recipe. Mine was a bit sticky, so I started adding only 3/4 Cup of water and it turned out perfectly! My daughter is so excited to give this away for her birthday party favors!

  8. Hello quick question how long after we pour the boiling water in do we have to wait for the dough to form? I’ve tried this twice now with no luck ;-(

    1. Hi Shauna,

You should see it form in under a minute. If not you may need to add some extra flour. I hope that helps.
      Louise

  9. Hi Louise,

Can you tell me what brand of food coloring did you use for this? Ours didn’t come out this color and we even tried adding more blue and still it didn’t come out right.

    1. Hi Misty,
You can use food color gel to make your play dough darker. You should be able to find Wiltons Gel food coloring in the speciality cake baking and decorating isle of your local Walmart store, it will be in the craft section close to the Wedding supplies. Most Walmart stores on the east coast don’t put it in the regular baking section. You can find it in most big name craft stores as well. The Wilton Brand comes in a small jar about one and a half inches tall and an inch in diameter with a white lid. The shade and the name of the color will be on a sticker on top of the lid. Since the food coloring is in a concentrated gel form instead of the liquid drops like you find at the supermarket, it gives you a darker, more intense color, and it doesnt take as much, therefore it won’t change the consistency of your dough by making it wetter when you add more color. The gel colors work wonderfully when making colored sand as well. Hope this helps, have fun making your play dough!!!

  10. Quick question: What’s the point of the hot water? Can it be made with just water? I’m working crafts at an outdoor camp so hot water is not an option for us.
