Calming and Stress Relieving Lavender Play Dough

Calming and Stress Relieving Lavender Play Dough

Here’s a beautifully soft ‘Calming’ Lavender Play Dough recipe that has a lovely and calming effect.  I made this for Master 2 to play with before his daytime naps. He’s become quite used to the calming sensation paired with a little ‘quiet’ play,  he often requests it before bedtime at night too. I can’t help but join in, there is something so relaxing about playing with this soft and squishy dough, it’s a fantastic stress reliever!!

We altered our  No-Cook Playdough Recipe to create this simple dough – all in under 5 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tbs of cream of tartar
  • 1 tbs of oil
  • Food colouring (we used Purple)
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Lavender Oil

Directions

Mix all ingredients except the boiling water together into a large mixing bowl. Combine the purple food colouring and the Lavender Oil into the boiling water *this is a job for adults* – please be very careful handling boiling water around children. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the water, mix well and then turn onto some baking paper to cool.

*Tip the play dough gives off the most ‘scent’ when it’s still slightly warm. This happens naturally from the warmth of your hands but i have been known to give the dough a little ‘hit’ in the microwave (15 seconds or so). *carefully re-kneed the dough fully before giving to your child so their are no ‘hot spots’.

  1. Hi I’ve just tried to make the lavender play dough. I am pretty sure followed the recipe to the letter. It is sloppy, sticky, can not be rolled . any ideas how I might fix this batch.

    1. Hi Angela,

So sorry to hear this. I’m not sure why it would be so sticky. Perhaps if you give it a little extra heat in the microwave it would help?

    2. Angela, I made some play dough today. It had the same ingredients as this recipe, but the flour content was 1 cup. I didn’t use the lavender oil. I did use food coloring. It came our great.

  2. I just tried this review too and stopped adding water at 1/2 a cup and it turned out perfect. Maybe you got the water doubled or it was supposed to be 2cups of flour? Also, I used essential oil of lavender and only used about 5 drops, and that seemed super strong to us.

  3. So I made this a couple weeks ago and it turned our perfect. First time I’ve followed a recipe and it hasn’t been sticky or a throw away playdough. So thank you! I did add more flour when kneading it (like 1/2 – 3/4 cup) after mixing all ingredients. It’s easier to knead than mix with a spoon. I think that helped with the nonstickiness! I also added lavender flowers for a fun texture and the kids loved it. I also just made this recipe but with a pina colada extract, yellow food coloring and orange glitter – and it’s amazingly perfect for our theme this week! So super thanks for the recipe. I know there are many many out there but this will be my go to now. = )

    1. Hi Tara, thank you so much for this wonderful feedback! I want to play with your Pina Colada play dough!! Sounds FUN!! Lou x

  4. Does this type of play dough go bad? Is there a shelf life and how does it get stored – is a large baggie good enough?

  5. I’m a nanny to two boys (three and four years old) and we absolutely love this! The three year old has sensory processing disorder so I’ve been trying to find different activities that would benefit him. This not only is great for him to touch and squeeze (its easier to play with/roll/flatten than store bought playdoh) but the lavender really calms both boys down. Its our favorite pre-nap activity! Thanks!

  6. I just made this for a school project in early childhood education and it came out great! I had to work with the amount of flour and left out the food coloring so I didn’t stain anything. It’s soft and beautiful and smells great! Love this recipe!
