How to Make Magic Aqua Sand

Magic Aqua Sand Tutorial - Make your own Magic Sand!

Wow! This is such a FUN and AMAZING play product that you can make at home! The kids will spend hours playing with this Magic Aqua Sand!

Check out the video below of this cool stuff in action!

I would recommend it’s made by adults for the kids to use under supervision.

What you’ll need –

  • Sand – sandbox or Craft Sand works best as it is generally a finer sand.
  • Coloured Sand (you can either buy this or make it using the easy method found here).
  • Fabric Protector Spray (we used Guardsman which cost under $4)
  • Baking Paper
  • Plastic containers to store your sand
  • Glass Vase
  • Water

Instructions –

Simply spread your sand over a sheet of baking paper in a well ventilated area (we made ours outside in the sun), have an adult spray an even but heavy coat of Fabric protector over the sand until it’s damp all over, then allow to dry. We then raked the sand and repeated the above process once more to ensure even coverage.

Once the sand has dried simply place it into a container that is easy for the kids to pour from.

Fill a glass vase with water and let the kids build their own cool underwater sculptures!

When they’re finished you can simply poor the sand and water out – you will be amazed to see the sand comes out completely DRY! Store it in sealed containers for another day.

*This is obviously something you shouldn’t let your children (or anyone) to  ingest – please  supervise them if you’re concerned they will try to eat some.

We hope you and your kids enjoy playing with this awesome Magic Aqua Sand as much as we did!

  1. So very glad I found this page so I can play with my grandson in England. Will be going there soon, so please post more, more & more.

    1. Hi Thelma, we are so pleased to hear this :). Thank you! We look forward to sharing lots & lots of new things with you :). Louise xx

  2. this makes me SO happy! we have some aqua sand that we love to play with, but dont use it that often bc it was hard to find! NOW WE CAN PLAY ALL WE WANT!!! 🙂

  3. I am so glad I found your site. I am one of those grandmothers that play with her grandkids all the time. We have a special cupboard for arts and crafts. We always make crafts together. I always have home made playdough and playdough tools, markers, crayons, glue, papers of all kinds, and many, many more arts and crafts stuff. Now that I found your site, we can even make science experiments together. I just love your site.

  4. How can I share your site with friends and family? I really want to share your idea about the colored sand.

  5. Oh we are sooo trying this stuff, now the weather is heading in the right direction (accept for spring snowfalls today & tomorrow);) GRRR lol! I am so excited to try this. I am wondering where to find this Fabric a Protector Spray? You’re not taking about the stuff we use to spray fake suede or real leather coats and boots in winter, are you?

  6. Hey just a random question can you keep the sand stored in a glass jar with the lid on and get the kids to give it to there grand parents or parents for a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift. Will it last is my question really or do you have to contiounly make it and empty it when finished, :))

    1. Hi Mandy, great question! I haven’t tried to store it in water so I’m not 100% sure of an answer. I don’t think the protector spray would disolve so therefore I think it should work??? Louise x

  7. i am a cub scout leader (8-11 year olds) and its amazing how much of what i see on here i can incorporate into the kids’ badge work. i have just as much fun practising at home by myself (to make sure i can coordinate 25 kids to do it all at once) as the kids do when we try out the projects at cubs. thanks for all the awesome stuff.

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback Sarah. We’re so happy we can help you come up with some fun activities to do with the kids…all 25 of them! WOW! Jenni x

  8. This is wonderful! I am a children’s programmer at the local library! And this is my go to website for ideas!

  9. Hello, I’m thinking of doing this with my kids & I think this is really a cool idea, but I’m not sure how we’ll be able to reuse this again. Won’t the colored sand get all mixed up once we empty the water bowl and the sand?

    1. Yes, the coloured sand does get mixed up but they still enjoy using it as a multi coloured material :). Louise x

  10. I’m curious as to if this would be safe for fish or do you think the chemicals used would harm them

  11. Hi, just wondering if the fabric protector spray is “Scotch guard spray”…. I’m in Oz and that’s all i can find here… thanks!!!!!! Have been looking for this for ages as i used to play with it all the time as a kid… mum still has the original stuff but wont let us “kids” pay with it anymore…..lol

    1. Hi Katie, Scotch Guard will work just as well :). We are in Australia too :). I’m not sure which brand would be cheaper but both should do the trick. Have FUN!

    1. It depends on your climate. Ours dried quickly because it was in the direct sun on a hot and dry day. I would say under two hours in the sun. Louise x

  12. Love this, and plan to try it with my boys. What would you recommend as an accompanying explanation of what is happening? I’m guessing that the spray makes the sand repel water. Curious as I’d like to further the learning associated with it.

  13. Hi,
I am having problems with this activity. What am I doing wrong if the sand isn’t repelling water in the same way that your photos and videos show? Do you have to put a lot of Scotch Guard?

  14. Was wondering how long the fabric guard lasts on the sand?? Does anyone know?? Thank you this is a great idea!!!!!!!!
