We recently created some cool Paint Resist Art using Vaseline – this is another simple project we came up with. It’s an easy craft idea for toddlers – you can help them stamp their hand and then allow them to paint the entire page – their handprint will magically appear on the page.
What you’ll need –
- Vaseline
- Wipes or a wet washer
- watercolour paints and brushes
Instructions –
Simply spread a little Vaseline on your child’s hand and gently press onto a sheet of card stock. Paint over the page with watercolours and watch as the handprint magically appears. Allow to dry.
I then printed this cute Handprint Quote over the painted and dried page.
We think this would be a great birthday activity.

I love this handprint idea, however how do you get the saying under the handprint. Do you have to take it to a special stencil place or can you do it yourself?

Hi Denise, I printed over the painting once it was fully dry. I used my home printer, making sure the writing would not go over the handprint itself. Hope that helps?

you can print over the painted page? i though the page would be too stiff to pass through the printer…

I tried something similar to this yesterday hoping to capture his lips (or kiss) and then paint his hand overtop of it as in to blow a kiss, but it didn’t work 🙁 I was using canvas, hopefully that wasn’t a problem, but im just wondering what I did wrong, or how I could correct it… any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂 thanks in advance!
Hi Maegan, I do find canvas is hard with watercolours. Unless there is a special kind of canvas for watercolours?

Funny I just did this with canvas before reading all this and it turned out awesome! That being said I imagine Maegan would have to put the lips “kiss” down first with some paint and then the vaseline hand print and follow through with the remainder of the painting. The vaseline would protect the kiss in the same fashion as the medium.
Is this done on a 5 x 7 or an 8 x 10 sheet of card stock.

i did it but i find the painted background to be a bit pale for my taste… would that still work with other paint than waterpaint? and what type of paint would you recommend?
Can you use printer paper? Or does it not work as well. Also do you let the kids paint right after they do the handprint or do you let the vasoline dry first?

You could use printer paper but I would make sure they don’t use too much water colour or the paper might rip? The Vaseline won’t really ‘dry’ so just wait until the paint is dry and try not to print directly on the handprints. Hope that helps? Louise x
