DIY Paint – Made from household ingredients
I just LOVE this recipe, it’s simple and FUN to make (like a mini science experiment), very low cost and it is really wonderful to paint with!
You will need:
3tbs sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup corn flour/corn starch
2 cups water
Food colouring
I made two batches to fill 6, 110 gram bottles.
Place all of your ingredients (except for the food colouring) into a saucepan on a low to medium heat and stir for about a minute a or so to combine all of the ingredients.
Then boost up the heat to high for another minute or so stirring continuously. You will notice the corn flour will start to separate into clumps. Don’t panic, these will stir out & become one with the mixture again : )
Turn the heat down to medium and keep stirring until your mixture thickens.
Let your mixture cool then place into your desired jars/cups/paint pots.
Add food colouring to create your desired colours and mix well (don’t forget to show the kids how cool it is to watch blue & red turn into purple etc).
These are some masterpieces the little cherubs created!

Hi, I love this idea but I was wondering if this paint is washable not only from skin but clothes as well. Please let me know so I can make this paint too. I don’t want to make it out unless I know that it washes from clothing and the like. Thank you in advance for your input on this DIY.
Hi Kathy, I have never had a problem with getting it out of clothes…in saying that though, if the kiddies do get it on them, the clothes go straight in the wash, so I would recommend the same for you : ) Have fun!! Jenni x
Hi
I have just made this for a play date for tomorrow. Just wondering if I made it righy because mine seems to be gluggy and more like glue. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Aleisha
Hi Aleisha, it definitely is thicker than ‘normal’ paint, but if it’s too thick for your liking, then just add a little more water
How long does this paint last and what kind of jars do you recommend storing it in?
Hi Melissa, we used glass baby food jars & it will store for a few days in the fridge…if you can get it off your kids for long enough lol! Jenni x

Love,from Bali
I made the paint tonight. My boy loved it, even if it is a bit thick. I wonder if using potato starch instead of corn made the difference.
Can you keep the artwork when using this paint? Or does it get bad because it’s food
Hi Mel, to be honest, it’s never lasted long enough in our house to find out 😉
