Homemade Puff Paint

Make your own Puff Paint!

DIY Puff Paint

Do you remember Puff Paint when you were a kid? You’d paint it on then watch it puff up with the heat from a blow dryer! Ahh the 80’s, we really had it going on back then! These days, my kiddies get a DIY version…all thanks to the new invention, the microwave!

This paint is inexpensive to make and most of the ingredients you probably already have at home!

There are so many FUN elements to this craft!  Cooking: The kids can mix all the ingredients themselves Maths: measuring out everything Science: combining the ingredients & using the funnel Art: after all of their hard work, they get to produce a masterpiece ; )  They also get to paint in a new way (using squeezy bottles) AND they get to watch their masterpieces grow in the microwave.

My kids really enjoyed themselves with this one (as did I).

You will need:

Ingredients

1 cup flour

2 tbs baking powder

2 tbs salt

Food colouring

Water

Materials

Squeezy bottles (you could also use piping bags or sandwich bags with one of the ends snipped off)

Funnel

Bowls

Spoons

Canvas (or cardboard)

We actually tripled the batch to make 5 different colours and still had some left over!

Then add water – a little at a time…you want to end up with a ‘pancake batter’ consistency, like so..

Note the plastic sheet under our workspace…I highly recommend this, it can get a little messy!

We then divided up the mixture into separate bowls & mixed in the different food colouring colours into each one.

It’s a great idea to use a funnel to add your paint into each squeezy bottle (the less mess the better I say!).

That’s my class clown!…hello ladies!

I found these tiny canvasses at the $2 shop (2 for $2.99) and thought they would be perfect! (just make sure you use something that will fit into the microwave!).

Then I just let the kids go to town…

Little Miss A got a little over excited and went a tad over board with the paint on hers!

Once your ‘masterpieces’ are complete, pop them in the microwave! 30 secs is all you need for a ‘normal’ painting (like Master L), but if you have quite a lot of paint, you will need to do more. We did Miss A’s for 30 secs initially, then did another 2 bursts of 20 seconds.

We then ended up with two beautiful pieces of art to hang on our walls : )

Not sure why they both decided to pose with their faces like this?! ; )

    1. Hi Lara!

We are glad you like it! It was super fun to make & the kids had a ball! I bought the bottles from one of my local $2 shops (Dollar Tree at the Maroochy Home Maker Centre). Hope this helps! Jenni x

    1. Hi Joanna, to be honest, I am not 100% sure. I would assume however that because the paint is made from ‘food’ materials, I would dare say that it might only last for a few weeks. An idea to try would be to spray with adhesive…perhaps that will prolong their life : ) Hope this helps & thanks for popping over! Jenni x

  1. Hi Jenni,

Just curious if your pictures are still lasting 5 weeks later? We tried this today – was great! (Although I did a simple recipe of SR flour and water). The paint seems to go slightly darker in the microwave if you cook it too long (I did 3x 30secs) so I just left the last bit to dry. They still look awesome though – thanks!

    1. Hi Megan,

So glad you gave this a try! The kids loved it! We still have ours hanging on the wall…I actually sprayed ours with some ‘Craft Smart’ to help seal it!
