This tub was so much FUN! And a nice change for Miss M from her regular play with Playdough.
Its very easy and fast to dye your own rice, we use the same technique with pasta too.
I buy rice in a 10kg bag and used roughly 1kg for this activity. Just add the rice to a large freezer bag, add a few squirts of hand sanitizer and a few drops of your desired food colouring. Give the bag a good shake to mix and then spread on a tray lined with baking paper to dry (it dries super fast with the alcohol from the hand sanitizer). Obviously you wouldn’t want your child to eat the rice – if you think that’s a possibility maybe do it without the hand sanitizer and allow longer to let it dry.
For this activity I added some plastic Easter eggs and Easter toys. Miss M enjoyed making mini shakers by filling and closing each egg – after Easter I think we’ll use some glue and make some permanent shakers.

Made this today and I was shocked at how easy it was. Just as your instructions said. My 3 year old and I did it together and had a ton of fun with some green and blue rice. We tried both with and without the hand sanitizer and found that it blends better with it, but is safer for the littles without it. Personal choice in the end. Now we are making a rainbow of colours. Thanks for the easy and fast tutorial!
That’s great Jenn! We’re so happy!!
