DIY Lava Lamp, Erupting Volcano & MORE. Fun Science Experiments for Kids

Science Experiment - Lava Lamp etc

We had such a FUN afternoon with the kids doing some Science Experiments! We did a DIY Lava Lamp, an Erupting Volcano & the old ‘Inflate a Balloon with Vinegar & Baking Soda‘ trick. The kids had a ball (and so did we!). I highly recommend you do this with your kids, it’s educational, entertaining and loads of FUN! We did up a little ‘Movie’ of our Fun Science Afternoon and also steps on how to do these experiments yourself! We hope you enjoy!

You will need:

Two Empty Water Bottles or Jugs

Food Colouring

Vegetable Oil and

Alka Seltzer (found at the grocery store)

Now for the ‘how go’s’:

Fill each bottle a little more than half way with the oil (pic 2)

Fill the rest of the way up with water, leaving about 2cms at the top (pic 3)

Add 15 – 20 drops of food colouring (pic 4)

Then break the Alka Seltzer in four pieces (pic 5)

And (now for the fun part), drop each piece of the Alka Seltzer in one at a time and watch your Lava Lamp take shape!

Then for our third and final experiment of the day we:

Inflating a Balloon with Vinegar & Baking Soda

For this experiment, all you need is:

A Balloon for each child

A Water Bottle each

A Small Funnel

A Large Glass Jar

Baking Soda (about 1/2 cup) &

Vinegar

Mummy pours the vinegar into our bottle

Half fill the water bottles with Vinegar and set aside

Add the Bi-Carb Soda via the funnel

Spoon the Bi-Carb into the balloon
Spoon the Bi-Carb into the balloon

Then the children add the Bi-Carb Soda to the balloon using the funnel (attach the balloon to the funnel then place in a glass jar first – this make is SO much easier!)

Attach the balloon to the water bottle
Attach the balloon to the water bottle

Attach the balloon to the water bottle so that the balloon hangs over one side.

Watch as your balloon magically inflates!

Then tip the ballon upright and watch as the balloon MAGICALLY INFLATES!
